Fire King

Notes & Combos

Inspired by Dinh-Kha Bui's success and Joshua Schmidt's testing in MD, I tried Pure Fire King despite owning none of the cards initially. I completed my Climb to Master 1 with a 67.2% winrate. The hefty investment was worthwhile.

GAMEPLAN

This deck simplifies the gamestate to win through superior grind game and recurring disruption. Even one Fire monster can represent 3-4 disruptions, leading to winning positions by turn 3. With Kirin's targeting evasion and almost entirely Fire monsters, we navigate common handtraps like Impermanence, Bystials, and Fuwaloss with ease. Dominus Impulse's release provided crucial disruption that doesn't fold to Called By/Crossout. Its restriction rarely matters since we typically use it after Fuwaloss or Maxx "C" anyways.

CORE

The non-negotiable core requires enough Fire monsters to guarantee two in your opening hand. With very few one-card combos outside Ponix, maximizing starters is essential. Because of this, I chose to run One for One, Extravagance, and 3x Sanctuary, leaving 18 flexible slots.

HANDTRAPS

Our essential handtraps include:

  • Ash Blossom (doubles as a Fire combo piece)
  • Maxx "C" (Master Duel staple)
  • Impermanence (synergizes with Impulse)
  • Impulse (maximized)

For other considerations:

  • Bystials (excel against Fiendsmith and Blue-Eyes)
  • Veiler (serves as additional Impermanences)
  • Fuwaloss (acts as alternative Maxx "C"s)

Droll and Nibiru have significantly underperformed in this deck. Droll often lets opponents build similar boards while more often hindering our plays more than theirs if trying to use it as a Maxx "C" counter. For Nibiru, a lot of decks also can play under or around it while also being really awkward using it with Impulse. These blowout handtraps felt like they could have been anything else but blowouts and they would have done better.

EXTRA DECK

Running 3 copies of Garunix Eternity and Promethean Princess is essential with Extravagance. TY-PHON rarely helped in losing positions. Duelittle Chimera and Sunlight Wolf are crucial for recycling semi-limited Kirin. Amblowhale, although not always the best play, provides Super Poly protection and interaction that plays around Impermanence better than ending on Arvata.

CONCLUSION

Not only does this deck delivers impressive performance with engaging back-and-forth gameplay, it is just a ton of fun as well. I definitely recommended this for anyone seeking a format change (especially if you can afford the URs).
